As Kim Kellogg spent six weeks recovering from a surgical procedure, she thought a lot about her work in the catering business, and stress.
'I felt like that was a wake-up call for me about my stress level, and so I wanted to do something a little different,' she said.
The granddaughter of avid antique collectors, Kellogg knew she had been instilled with love for that activity.

'They lived in West Virginia near Fenton Art Glass Factory, and they'd take me to watch the glass being made,' Kellogg said. 'That just fascinated me.' Eventually, that interest extended to larger pieces including furniture and 'all things beautiful.'
She also knew, from her consistent search for places to go antiquing, that her city, Hampton, was lacking in that realm. She decided to fill the void and opened her own business, Lilac Lane, on East Mercury Boulevard in 2014.
People came from near and far with items to sell on consignment, and before long the almost 1,000-square-foot store was stocked with antiques.

Her do-it-yourself classes took flight and Kellogg pivoted the business within a business. Some of her customers drove from as far as Yorktown to enjoy the do-it-yourself crafts, so Kellogg decided to move that part of the business north.
Unfortunately, two weeks after she signed a lease to open a second location, the coronavirus started to become a household name.
Her plan was to keep the antiques at the Hampton shop and offer the do-it-yourself crafts at the new location in York County.
After a great deal of thought and prayer, Kellogg said, she closed the Hampton store at the end of August and moved all of her inventory to the new store.
Lilac Lane opened in a 1,600-square-foot store in the York Village Shopping Center at the beginning of September.

On the DIY side, Kellogg started to offer take-home kits in March after she was forced to temporarily shut down because of the pandemic.
'I produced five different take-home kits a week — sometimes 10,' she said. 'I did live videos to show people how to do them and then they could come pick them up curbside or I porch-dropped them for months.'
The kits — including paint-your-own pottery; sign, card and banner set-ups; door hangers; and wreaths — reaped a host of new customers as people were looking for something to do at home, Kellogg said.
'I'm a huge crafter, so if I can figure out how to do it I will turn it into a kit or class,' she said.
